Research and Planning-Model Makeup
Below I have some photographs of my music magazine model wearing different styles of make-up that she may possibly wear for my photo shot:
I think the make-up in the third photo would be most appropriate, the red lipstick and dark eye makeup looks effective and also stands out well.

Research and Planning-Masthead Fonts
As I'm about to begin the production process of my magazine cover I researched some fonts that I would use for my magazine masthead. I downloaded the fonts from 'dafont.com' and made them red on a black background which I will use for my masthead.
However I think the mast head may possibly look better and more clear as white on a black background.
Research and Planning-Plan for the Week
This week I will:
Get all location and model forms filled out.

Research and Planning-Plan for Location of Photoshoot
This weekend coming I will take the photographs for my music magazine. I have several possible locations that I will use. One location is in Werneth Low, Hyde. The location is by a decaying brick wall and over looks Manchester. I will take the photos in a place similar to this:
Another possible location is at the back of a row of shops in Denton. The area has a very derelict and urban feel to it, there are a row of garages that are gratified and seem to be wearing away. I think this would be suitable for my genre as it's often similar looking locations used in indie/rock magazines.
A third location that I may use is an abandoned were house just outside of Manchester city centre.

Research and Planning-Double Page Spread Analysis
This double page magazine interview looks at the same genre of music that my magazine does. It uses a colour scheme of red white and black. The background behind the main article is white so that the main text is clear and easily read. The headers are black and red which makes it stand out more. There are also several images of the featured artists on the page, some smaller and some of the main images are larger which instantly draws the readers eye to the article. Any bold information is either in a bright colour or is on a bright background e.g. white text on a red background which makes it stand out to the reader. The article is in columns, two on each page. Most of the photographs used have a dark dingy tone to them which is something I should look at when taking the photographs for my music magazine. Also they use black and white images aswell as coloured ones, this is something I am considering using this in my magazine.

Research and Planning-Photoshoot Location
The genre of music my magazine will be aimed at is indie/rock. I have looked at examples of photo shoots by artists who fit this genre to get ideas about location and how the photographs look best suitable.
Below are some examples:
Arctic Monkeys
Foals
The Kooks
The Pretty Reckless
The majority of these photo-shoots appear to take place outdoors in quite urban looking areas. They also tend to use black and white which. The lead singer/main artists is always stood nearer to the camera and is the main focus of the image. A lot of the photographs seem to be taken by walls/enclosed outdoor areas. This gives me a possible idea for where I can photograph my model(s). I will take the photographs down by the railway bridge near the junction pub in Guide Bridge. This area has quite a dingy and urban look to it which I think would fit my genre well. However, one thing I will do differently that doesn't seemed to be used in these shots are the use of instruments which I think would have a better effect. In my photographs I am going to use one or more bass guitars. I think that particular instrument is representative of my chosen genre.

Research and Planning-Using the SLR Cameras
We used the SLR cameras to take practice shots for our music magazine covers. We took some outside and some inside, four of these are shown above. I found from taking these photographs that the quality of the images taken outside look better than the ones taken inside. I will take the photographs for my music magazine cover outside. In comparison to the photographs I took for my college magazine cover these photos are much more clear. This is because the SLR cameras have a higher mega pixel than the digital cameras we used for the college magazine photos.

Research and Planning-Audience Feedback Magazine First Draft
Based on my audience research I found that the most popular genre of music for my target audience is indie/rock which is what genre my music magazine will focus on.
Also I found that the most popular colour scheme is red, white and black. Also some people suggested green but I don't feel that it ties in with the other colours so have chosen not to include it in the design. One of the favourite music magazines amongst my target audience is Q magazine, this also uses a similar colour scheme which has helped influence my design for the cover.

Research and Planning-What I found from my target audience
I conducted several audience interviews in which I recorded myself and other classmates interviewing our target audience (teenagers) about music magazines. Also I handed out ten questionnaires around my class which were also asking question about music and music magazines.
From doing this research I found:
From doing this research I found:
- The colour scheme I should use for my magazine is black, red and white. Possibly I could use some greens.
- The most popular music magazines were Q and Kerrang. Therefore I will look on the styles, layout and content of these magazines and base my designs on them to make sure it also appeals to my target audience.
- The features that people will most enjoy reading about are news about bands/artists and interviews. I also found that people didn't like reading the sections where readers write in to the magazine.
- The most popular genre's of music amongst my target age range are indie, rock and pop. This is relevant to my magazine as it will be an indie/rock genre magazine which means my target age range will find it appealing.

Research and Planning-Audience Interviews
We conducted some audience interviews to find out from our target audience what we should incorporate in the music magazine. We asked each of the interviewee's several questions to find out their thoughts and opinions on music magazines and what they would like to find in an up and coming music magazine.
Research and Planning-Production Schedule
This schedule shows the things I have to complete for my music magazine and the dates that I plan to complete them. The green squares show the dates I plan to complete each particular piece of work.

Research and Planning-Collage
I created a collage out of music magazine clippings that are similar to the genre of magazine that I'm going to create. I used things like mastheads, photographs and articles from the magazines 'Q' and 'Kerrang'. From doing this I can see most bands in the genre I am choosing consist of mainly males. Also I should use a colour scheme of red, white and black and also bold fonts. I saw that most of the artists in this genre are bands rather solo artists.

Research and Planning-Questionnaire Results
Above is the questionnaire that I created on Microsoft Word. I printed out 10 copies and handed them out randomly around the class. the questions asked were in relation to my music magazine such as "What would you most like to find in a music magazine?"
I then used charts on PowerPoint to put my results into pie-charts. My results are shown below.

Research and Planning-Contents Page Analysis
The genre of the magazine is indie/rock. This can be easily distinguished by the bands that are featured on the page that fit this genre. The target audience is teenagers that are aged 15 to around 19 that are mainly male but also some females too. They also probably attend quite a lot of gigs and are interested in live music, I can tell that by the bottom right of the page where it says "The UK's number 1 gig guide starts p58." This feature of the magazine is put in and displayed clearly to appeal to that type of person. Across the top of the contents page displayed clearly and designed to be eye-catching it says "NME THIS WEEK". This clearly shows that everything on the page will be featured in that issue of the magazine. Down the left hand side of the page it says "band index" with a large list of bands and the page number(s) that they feature on in that issue. This tells us the magazine mainly focuses on bands rather than solo artists. It also makes it more convenient for the reader if they are only interested in reading about certain bands in that issue.
Down the far right of the page it has different headings such as: "NEWS" and "REVIEWS" then has page numbers underneath and a brief summary of some of the articles that fall under each particular category. This also makes it easier for the reader to identify certain things they want to read about, for example if they are only interested in reading about live events such as concerts then they can just look under that heading and find the page numbers. the centre of the page contains a large imaged and an out-take of one of the main articles from the issue, in this case it happens o be called, "The moment that...Kasabian got romantic in a church" This writing is in bold font to draw in readers attention as does the imaged, its one of the first things your eye is drawn to when you look at the page. This is done to encourage the reader to read on and read the rest of the article. At the bottom of the page is an advert to subscribe to the magazine. This is bold and eye-catching and trys to persuade the reader by saying "save over £45". The page sticks to the magazine colour scheme of red, white and black. The central image is a long shot of a live performance. This also conveys that the target audience are interested in attending gigs and live music.
Research and Planning-Music Magazine Audience
Categorizing my audience:
Age: The target age of my magazine will be teenagers from around the age of 15-19 years old.
Gender: The target gender is of the magazine is probably both male and female. There are bands that appeal to both boys and girls that will be featured in the magazine.
Occupation: The audience will most likely be in education, either high school or college, probably in university too.
Class: There isn't really a set class of people who are interested in this kind of music, however its probably more aimed at working/middle class people.
Wealth: Not extremely wealthy especially if students, most likely on minimum wage but maybe they spend money on gigs.
Interests: Listening to music, singing/playing instruments (maybe in a band), going to gigs, socializing with friends.
Outlook for the future: Maybe going to university/college or getting a job.
How are you going to reach them: Gig reviews, dates and images from gigs they be interested in or may have gone to. The gig dates page will keep them informed of any upcoming gigs of bands they are interested in seeing live. Could also use photos from concerts and bright colours.
I think this photo is representative of my target audience.

Research & Planning-Magazine Masthead Trials
This is a potential masthead I may use for my music magazine. I downloaded the 'neon' font from dafont.com and put it on a red background using photoshop and also changed the text colour to white.
Above is another potential design for my magazine masthead. I downloaded the font 'Swinkydad' from dafont.com and changed the text colour to black. I then used phtoshop to place it on a black background.
A third possible idea for my magazine masthead. Again I downloaded a font from dafont.com, this was a font called 'rainyday'. I changed the color to red and placed it on a white background.
In all 3 of these ideas I have used my research which showed me that most of the magazines used a colour scheme of red, white and black.

Research and Planning-Music Magazine Analysis
This magazine is also indie/rock as it's the same magazine that I analyzed before but with a different cover. On the front cover is a medium close up image of Arctic Monkeys. This tells me straight away that the genre of this magazine is indie/rock, I can also tell this from other band names featured such as The Strokes. The cover uses a colour scheme of white and red. The main headlines/band names are written in white and the subheadings are in red. Also the name of the magazine "Q" is bold and in white, on a white background which makes it clear and stand out; this would instantly grab your attention on the shelf of a shop. The target audience is teenagers, I know that Arctic Monkeys have a large number of teenage fans so this magazine issue will definitely appeal to them. Also in the top left it says "the ultimate festival guide" most people who go to festivals are teenagers and young adults so this also tells me that the magazine is aimed at this group of people. In the photo of Artic Monkeys the lead singer (Alex Turner) takes up most of the space and the rest of the band members are in the background. This shows us instantly that he is the lead singer and probably the person that the readers are most interested in.

Research and Planning-Music Magazine Analysis
The genre of this magazine is rock/indie. It mainly focuses on bands which I can tell from the photograph and the names of bands e.g. Foo Fighters and Muse. Uses a white and red colour scheme.
The target audience of this magazine are teenagers and people who like rock/indie music. I can tell this by the image and the list of bands on the cover that fit this genre. The image of the singer and guitarist (Dave Grohl-Foo Fighters) makes me think that he is passionate about his music, this also makes me think readers of this magazine will be passionate about that style of music. the magazine cover contains larger fonts for the main parts of the magazine issue, in this case 'Foo Fighters' stands out. The name of the magazine also stands out.

Research and Planning-Evaluating My College Magazine
I think my magazine cover fits to criteria for appealing to college students, it contains a colour scheme that the college uses and also contains an image of a student in the college. I also think it looks clear and is easy to understand. I think the layout looks quite effective as all the key characteristics of a college magazine are inplace on it. The fonts used for the masthead are different than that of the story headlines and contents page. I think I used ICT well to create my design, I used InDesign. I used bold and clear text and also a large, central medium close up image on my cover. However, I should have used images on the context page. I think the photographs I took around college for the magazine cover were relatively good, the one I used was the most apporopriate in my opinion. I feel that I manipulated the photograph well as it didn't become pixilated or look squashed/stretched. Generally I am pleased with my design and think it looks appealing and fits the criteria well.
